About “The Blazing BBQ”

In brief, I love to BBQ… although I personally call it a Braai (pronounced “br-eye”). But that’s just because I’m from South Africa originally and so that’s what I grew up with. I also feel that a South African Braai is slightly different from an American, British, Australian, or other place Barbecue. One of the big things being the greater emphasis on a braai being a social event (especially for the men gathered around), but also the huge amount of MEAT… the 100% kind… you tend to find on a braai.

Although I have owned both gas and charcoal before, I tend to head for the charcoal mainly for the “lighting a fire” experience. However, I really appreciate the gas for a ‘quick starting’, ‘getting things going fast’ type of BBQ. One thing I really, really don’t like… disposable bbq’s! Don’t get me started.

I love to experiment when I BBQ as well. I like experimenting with different meats, different sauces and marinades, different vegetables done in different ways… all sorts of things. A BBQ is an exciting adventure for both me and my visitors… Some of my friend’s have once remarked “Don’t turn down a Shaun-type braai”. It’s always fun… and of course, I love the BBQ taste. WOW! I chuck almost anything I can find on the grill, just to see how it’ll come out. Mainly though… it’s all about the MEAT. Yum!
